Pre-Baiting
Rats are very sensitive to any marked change or to the presence of any new articles in their environment. Hence placing of poison baits all of a sudden, for rat control, is not likely to yield any satisfactory results. For the first four or five days, place plain baits consisting of any material available locally in the vicinity of rat burrows or areas frequently visited by rats. The bait material should be whole wheat, rice, sweet potato pieces, dry fish, food articles or any such material which could be relished by rats. Rats are very bait-shy and may not touch the plain baits for the first few days. When the rats get used to the plain baits and consume them, we can find out the places or bait points from where the baits have been consumed by rats. This, in short is the process called Pre-baiting.

When more than 75% of the plain baits at the known bait points have been consumed, add 10 gms Zinc Phosphide to 10 gms edible oil and mix with 380 gms of food. Keep 10gms of poisoned bait at the bait points. The placing of poison baits should be continued for two to three days by which time, 75 to 85% of the rat population would have been exterminated. Do not use either plain baits or poison baits for another fortnight or so when again pre-baiting should commence but with a different base for bait, followed by poison bait later. This follow-up treatment should account for the population left alive after the first course. While preparing the baits, either plain or poison, actual manual handling should be avoided as far as possible.
